ANTIOXIDANTS AND SKIN CARE

because this type of oxygen has one electron and it needs two electrons to be stable. Free radicals are out there scavenging your healthy skin cells for that electron they’re missing. This results in your skin cells now missing the electrons these free radicals stole from them. Air pollution, smoking and UV radiation among others are all examples of the type of free radicals that age and damage your skin. If you think of free radicals as a knife out of it’s sheath attacking your skin you’ll have a visual of how free radicals are attacking and breaking down the collagen in your healthy skin cells. This in turn damages the skins DNA structure which results in even more damage (wrinkles, dullness, and discoloration)to your beautiful skin. To combat this free radical damage you use antioxidants which reduce oxidative stress and neutralize them. In other words it builds a sheath around the knife and prevents free radicals from damaging and inflaming otherwise healthy skin cells.

The best anti-aging creams, the best eye creams and wrinkle creams all have antioxidants in them. There a long list of antioxidants, for example, Vitamins A, C, E, beta carotene, CoQ-10, astaxanthin, alpha lipoic acid, selenium, glutathione and that’s not a complete list. These come from a variety of natural plant and ocean sources. It’s important, as much as possible, to get natural skin care products. And you want more than “just a sprinkle” of antioxidants in the products you buy. Some manufactures of anti-aging serums or creams put a tiny amount of one or more antioxidants just so they can list it on the ingredients label but it’s not enough to have any real effectiveness.

Anti-inflammation is one of the benefits of antioxidants. They calm down the inflammation by increasing the cell metabolism and circulation to skin cells. Skin firming is another benefit. Skin tends to sag with age but antioxidants improve skin firmness, health and give it a more youthful appearance. Look for eye creams with good amounts of antioxidants contained in them.

Repairing sun damage and reducing the skin wrinkled look are also benefits of using antioxidants in night creams and serums. These help pump out the skin, reducing the fine lines and creating younger looking skin. Because antioxidants tend to increase blood flow in the skin this can encourage the growth of new cells to replace the old sun damaged skin cells giving an overall younger and healthier look to your skin.
